    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Army Air Force with s/n 41-38749.

    Based at Oran in Algeria.

    Transferred to Eighth Air Force.

    21 March 1944

    Transferred to Ninth Air Force-29th Troop Carrier Squadron,.

    6 June 1944

    D-Day landing -Transported paratroopers of the 3rd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment to a drop zone one mile NW of Picauville, Normandy, France on Mission Boston - was battle damaged by enemy ground fire.

    From 28 December 1945 to 5 January 1952

    To Scottish Aviation Ltd, Prestwick Airport, Scotland with new c/r G-AGWS (DOUGLAS C47 DAKOTA 3, 6208).

    From 1951 to 1952

    Crashed.
    The accident occurred at the Anchorage International Airport (ANC) Anchorage, AK, United States while landing. The damage was substantial. During the landing roll, after a wheel landing, the airplane veered left and departed the runway. The airplanes tailwheel fork assembly fractured. Postaccident inspection revealed the tailwheel offset to the left of the fuselage. The airplane and assembly had both accumulated 29846 hours in operation at the time of the accident.

    Notes: Here in Palmer, Alaska, I see this gorgeous plane nearly daily. It has always tugged at me; now knowing the history, I better understand. This was taken yesterday, nearly sunset 4:30pm.
