    Constructed as a Spitfire F.IX by Vickers-Armstrong at Castle Bromwich.

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the Royal Air Force with s/n LZ842.

    17 April 1943

    To 39 MU, Colerne.
    Sent to 39 MU for radio and armament fitting.

    11 May 1943

    Transported by ship.
    Shipped to Casablanca aboard the SS Fort Jersey for service with the Middle East Air Force.

    July 1943

    Transferred to 232 Squadron.

    Transferred to 232 Squadron Operating, Serretelle Landing Ground, Naples, Italy.

    LZ842 carrying Mediterranean markings, Desert colour topside and a Blue underside.On Patrol Missions, Mk Vs patrolled at 15,000ft and Mk 9s patrolling 20,000ft.

    From October 1943 to November 1943

    Transferred to 93 Squadron, Malta.

    October 1944

    Transferred to 327 (Free French) Squadron.

    Stored at the end of the war.

    LZ842 was one of the 136 Spitfires transferred to South Africa.

    April 1948

    Transported by ship.
    Shipped to South Africa, Arriving in Cape Town.

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the South African Air Force with s/n LZ842.

    To South African Metal and Machinery Co.
    Sold for for scrapping.

    1978

    To SAAF Museum.
    Fortunately LZ842 survived as a hulk in the Scrapyard and was transferred to the museum and placed in storage.

    1989

    Transported by ship.
    Moved to the U.K.

    Transported by ship.
    Moved to Queensland, Australia.

    2003

    To Peter Monk, UK.

    2004

    To Mark Bennett, UK.

    To Airframe Assemblies, Sandown, Isle of Wight, Isle of Wight, England.

    Fueslage and Wings Commenced at Airframe Assemblies.

    To Mark Arwyn Bennett, Heath Farm House, Heath Lane, Godalming with new c/r G-CGZU (SPITFIRE IX, CBAF 5056).

    Based at Biggin Hill Airport, Croydon, London, England.
    Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar.

    2021

    Restoration completed.
    Restoration is Complete. LZ842 is the second earliest Mk IX in airworthy condition, and the only Spitfire flying in the world with a Rolls Royce Merlin 63.
