    This was a stock P-51D with minor airframe cleanup and a round tip Hamilton Standard propeller with cuffs installed. Competed at the National Air Races Los Angeles in the Unlimited class. The primary pilot was Lyle Shelton. No time was recorded and finished in 9th place. Raced in the Reserve race. Finished in 2nd place with an average speed of 350.27 mph.

    Raced as #12, named Little One.
    This was a stock P-51D with minor airframe cleanup and a round tip Hamilton Standard propeller installed. Competed at the National Championship Air Races in the Unlimited class. The primary pilot was Lyle Shelton. Qualified in 5th place with an average speed of 328.02 mph. Raced in Heat 1. Finished in 3rd place with an average speed of 320.28 mph. Raced in Heat 3 Silver. Finished in 3rd place with an average speed of 334.26 mph. Raced in the Trophy race. Finished in 6th place with an average speed of 331.99 mph.

    Notes: 1965 was the year that Lyle Shelton got his start in Unlimited Class Air Racing. He flew this stock Mustang that was owned by Richard Varantanian.

    Notes: In 1964 and 1965 the Reno National Championship Air Races were held at a privately-owned airport just outside Sparks, Nevada. From 1966 to 2023 the races were held at Stead Airport, which was actually in the city of Reno.
