    Delivered to Muroc Air Force Base, CA.

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Army Air Force with s/n 44-61509.

    Used in an extensive engine testing program. One of the original J35 engines was changed to J47.

    Markings Applied: Versatile II

    When the clear plastic nose began to crack from variations in temperature at high and low altitudes, mechanics fashioned a more durable replacement made from plywood.

    This plane was kept flying by cannibalizing the first XB-43, which had been damaged in an accident on February 1, 1951.
