    Constructed as a Yak-3U (replica).
    Built by Yakovlev in Orenburg, Russia, a part of a production run of 11 Model 3UAs with Allison V1710 engines installed.

    To Gunnell Aviation/Flight Magic Inc, Santa Monica, CA.

    From 10 June 1994 to By 1995

    To Flight Magic Inc/Bruce Lockwood, Pacific Palisades, CA with new c/r N494DJ.

    July 1994

    Used for US certification test flying at Mojave, CA.

    From 12 September 1994 to 18 September 1994

    Raced as #12.
    Competed at the National Championship Air Races in the Unlimited class. The primary pilot was Alan Preston from Pacific Pallisdaes, CA. Qualified in 22nd place with an average speed of 306.996 mph. Raced in Heat 1C. Finished in 3rd place with an average speed of 268.708 mph. Did not start in Heat 3. Raced in the Medallion 2 race. Finished in 2nd place with an average speed of 300.538 mph.

    Painted in a Soviet AF colour scheme.

    To John Wright, South Africa keeping c/r ZS-STU.

    High rear decking similar to Yak-1 installed.

    Returned to standard Yak-9 fuselage with the decking removed.

    Damaged.
    Details of whatever incident which caused the damage are not not available.

    October 2004

    Spotted damaged in a hangar at the Johannesburg-Rand airport damaged.

    Civil registration, ZS-STU, cancelled.
