Mr. Lee outfitted the plane with floats for a projected round-the-world flight; the project was not completed, but the aircraft did fly the Eastern seaboard with the floats. It was converted back to a land plane before he sold it. |

Mr. Hannaford hoped to restore the aircraft to flying condition, and searched for Alpha parts all over the USA. He was unable to restore the aircraft before he died in 1971. The plane was willed to the Experimental Aircraft Association. |

The National Air and Space Museum learned of the Alphas existence and negotiated with the EAA and Trans World Airlines for its restoration. TWA undertook the project. |
