After departure from Old Orchard Field (Maine, USA) this aircraft, piloted by Assolant, Lefevre and Lotti flew in 29 hours 22 minutes to Oyambre, near Comillas in Spain. Original goal was non-stop to Le Bourget. Due to weather conditions, the team could not follow the optimal route, and was forced to shift its course south, which increased the distance traveled and fuel consumption. The weather related problems the team encountered and changing the course saved their lives, because without doing so, the fuel starvation would have occurred over the Bay of Biscay off France, and they would have to ditch the aircraft in rough seas. |
