    Constructed as a Vampire FB.5.

    25 July 1948

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the Royal Air Force with s/n VV217.

    This aircraft was owned by the Ministry of Supply, but used by de Havilland for test flying. De Havilland test pilot John Derry flying this actual aircraft set a record in the spring of 1949 flying in 45 minutes from Paris to Cannes to win the Coupe Montana Prize, comprising a trophy and 10,000 francs.

    New serial number assigned: 7323M RAF
    At 5FTS Okington as Instructional airframe.

    1960

    Moved to Honington.

    1980

    With 301 ATC, Bury St.Edmonds.

    Notes: Back in 1980, 301 Sqn ATC kept this really early single seat Vampire FB.5 at Bury St.Edmunds. VV217 seems to be with the de Havilland Museum these days, but in storage somewhere

    The aircraft was transferred to the museum from NEAM in Sunderland in August 2009 by its owner Dave Charles, and is currently in storage pending restoration, when space allows.
