    From October 1943 to May 1944

    Constructed as a XB-42.
    Ordered as XA-42, but designation changed 26 November 1943.

    May 1944

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Army Air Force with s/n 43-50224.

    6 May 1944

    First flight.
    Flown by Bob Brush and taking off from the Palm Springs Army Airfield in California.

    By 30 September 1944

    Made 42 flights and accumulated over 34 flight hours.

    By September 1945

    Total of around 150 flights, with the aircraft accumulating around 125 flight hours.

    By 25 June 1946

    Made 168 flights and had flown around 144.5 hours.

    From 26 June 1946 to October 1946

    Converted to a XB-42A.
    Added a jet engine under each wing.

    27 May 1947

    First flight as XB-42A, at Muroc Air Base, CA.

    18 September 1947

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Air Force with s/n 43-50224.

    Struck off Strength/Charge from the United States Air Force.

    To United States Air Force Museum, Patterson Field (East Side), Dayton, OH.

    To Smithsonian National Air Museum, Paul Garber Restoration Facility, Suitland, MD.
    The airframe was gifted to the Smithsonian in 1949, but it is unclear when it may have been placed in storage at the Paul Garber facility.

    Transported by ground. Delivered to National Museum of the United States Air Force, Wright Field, Dayton, OH.
