Shot down a VPAF MiG-21 over North Vietnam. Malen Dowse comments (6 January 2021): This F-4D is a MiG killer from the Vietnam war. Pilot was Capt Steve Ritchie, WSO was CPT Larry Pettit. Interesting note; both pilot and Weapons System Officers were given credit for a MiG kill. This aircraft was CPT Steve Ritchies second MiG credit, of which he received a total of 5 during the war making him the US Air Force Pilot Ace. CPT Pettit was credited with two MiG kills during the war, one in this aircraft and one in another F4 which is also on display at Forbes Field, Topeka in the Combat Air Musuem. Thus, after 30 plus years both F-4s that CPT Pettit was flying in for the MiG kill ended up on public display within a mile of each other. A long way from Udorn, Thailand where they were based during the Vietnam War. |
