    Constructed as a YC-17A.
    Was essentially hand-built for the sole purpose of developmental test and evaluation, with an estimated life span of approximately five years.

    First flight.
    Ferried directly to Edwards AFB, CA for delivery for testing.

    15 September 1991

    Taken on Strength/Charge with the United States Air Force with s/n 87-0025.

    Transferred to 6517th Test Squadron, 6510th Test Wing, Air Force Flight Test Center, Edwards AFB, CA.

    Circa November 1991

    Transferred to 417th Flight Test Squadron, 412th Test Wing, Air Force Flight Test Center, Edwards AFB, CA.
    Operated with markings: ED

    During flight-testing, it set 33 world records, more than any other airlifter in history, including payload to altitude, time-to-climb, and short-takeoff-and-landing marks in which the C-17 took off in less than 427 meters, carried a payload of 20,000 kg to altitude, and landed in less than 427 meters.     Circa 1996

    Redesignated as C-17A.

    By October 1998

    Transferred to 418th Flight Test Squadron, 412th Test Wing, Edwards AFB, CA.

    After completing the extensive C-17 flight test program, it supported many other flight and propulsion test programs for the USAF and NASA.The aircraft was periodically rebuilt and refurbished over the years and its lifespan grew from five to 21 years.

    30 January 2001

    Airman Thomas Fields saved the life of a crewman whose parachute accidentally opened in the cargo bay during flight at 1200 feet with the paratroop door open. He was awarded Cheney Award and Airmans Medal.
