Photos of roadside warbirds and museum collections are most welcome.
Photos of aircraft as they are currently displayed are great, but photos of airframes in previous markings, with past owners or during a restoration are fantastic as well. You can help document the history of airframes with photos!

    Airframe: North American P-51D-20-NA Mustang, s/n 44-63576 USAAF, c/n 122-31302, c/r N51DH
Notes: Another intriguing photo from the Al Chute material from this April. Wheaties Welch is the cockpit of I assume the same Mustang. He is talking to Ron Freeman. Ron Freeman would be the owner of the Mustang that eventually became Wraith/Jay Dee. Again not sure of the significance of this photo and why it would be included in the files. Again this is from the Al/Bob Chute Collection.

Notes: This photo was discovered this past April. It was with a large amount of archive material that Al Chute and his brother Bob had acquired over the years. This is a picture of George Wheaties Welch. It was in the archives from the Cleveland National Air Races office that were given to Al Chute by Ben Franklin when he closed the office in the 1960s. This photo shows Welch on the wing of a VLR Mustang. Notice his flying shoes!

    Airframe: Lockheed P-38L-5-LO Lightning, s/n 44-53078 USAAF, c/n 422-8333, c/r N504MH
Notes: Tony LeVier surprised everyone by bringing his P-38 Lightning Fox of the Skyways to a second place finish in the 1946 Thompson Trophy. 1946 was the Battle of the Test Pilots and LeVier did well in representing Lockheed. Another image from the archives of Emil Strasser preserved for the ages by Gerry Liang.

    Airframe: Vought-Goodyear FG-1A Corsair, s/n 13481 USN, c/n 2850, c/r N69900
Notes: Veteran Air racing photographer/historian Emil Strasser took this excellent image of Cook Cleland and his FG-1 Corsair at the 1946 National Air Races. This plane would undergo several different changes in markings as the event progressed. It arrived in overall white paint scheme. Eventually it would be cream and maroon by the time the Thompson Trophy race came on Labor day.

Notes: North American test pilot George Wheaties Welch was entered in this stock looking Mustang at Cleveland in 1946. Photos of this airplane in 1946 seem to be relatively rare. Pete Bowers captured this image.

    Date Uploaded: 3 November 2019
    Airframe: Bell P-39Q-10-BE Airacobra, s/n 42-20733 USAAF, c/n 26E-188, c/r N92847
Notes: A photo of Jack Wollams with Cobra I. As we know Jack would perish in this airplane during a test flight after an engine change in Buffalo. Most likely cause was the collapse of the windscreen. Bell aircraft took no chances though as some reports thought the tail had come off the airplane. Stiffeners were added to the tail of Cobra II prior to the Thompson and well as reinforcement to the windscreen.
