Photos of roadside warbirds and museum collections are most welcome.
Photos of aircraft as they are currently displayed are great, but photos of airframes in previous markings, with past owners or during a restoration are fantastic as well. You can help document the history of airframes with photos!

    Date Uploaded: 3 November 2019
    Airframe: Vought-Goodyear FG-1A Corsair, s/n 13481 USN, c/n 2850, c/r N69900
Notes: Color photos of post-war racer are rare. Phil Krause was a fellow historian and member of the Society of Air Racing Historians. I spent many a Friday night-Saturday night at the bar at the Holiday Inn at Cleveland Airport talking about air racing. His father knew Russ Hosler and as a young guy Phil got to know him as well. Phil had many colorful stories to share and he was of course very interested in the No. 55 Kingcobra that was sponsored by Hosler aircraft in 1948. Phil passed away several years ago and I recently acquired some images from his collection. I thought this one of Lucky Gallon was very unusual. It is after Cleveland in 1946 and now has the City of Painsville Logo on the fuselage. I am not sure who is standing by the wing. Maybe someone knows.

Notes: Harold Pemberton flew this P-63F at the 1946 Cleveland Air Races. It would survive the racing era and recently took the air again.

    Airframe: North American P-51D-20-NA Mustang, s/n 44-63576 USAAF, c/n 122-31302, c/r N51DH
Notes: A very rare photo of the P-51 Mustang that was flown by George Wheaties Welch in the 1946 Thompson Trophy. This has been one of the more difficult post war Unlimited aircraft to document as it appeared in 1946. This Mustang was later named Wraith and flown by Paul Penrose in 1947. It was sold to J.D. Reed in 1948 when it was flown by Charlie Walling. It was renamed Jay Dee by J.D. Reed. It was flown in 1949 by Ken Cooley and James Hagerstrom.

Notes: One of a series of photos of the ultimate clipped wing P-63 Kingcobra of Chuck Tucker by Harold G. Martin at the 1946 Cleveland Air Races.

Notes: Another intriguing photo from the Al Chute material from this April. Wheaties Welch is the cockpit of I assume the same Mustang. He is talking to Ron Freeman. Ron Freeman would be the owner of the Mustang that eventually became Wraith/Jay Dee. Again not sure of the significance of this photo and why it would be included in the files. Again this is from the Al/Bob Chute Collection.

Notes: This photo was discovered this past April. It was with a large amount of archive material that Al Chute and his brother Bob had acquired over the years. This is a picture of George Wheaties Welch. It was in the archives from the Cleveland National Air Races office that were given to Al Chute by Ben Franklin when he closed the office in the 1960s. This photo shows Welch on the wing of a VLR Mustang. Notice his flying shoes!
