He ended having to bale out of the airplane during the Thompson. He suffered a broken leg and a destroyed airplane. This ia actually cleveland 1938 before the allerons floodered. It also has the small tail in this picture. That tail is all that survived of the airplane and now hangs at Pioneer airport with the EAA. By 1939 the allerons had counter ballances added and the canopy was modified to a slide type.
